长篇小说《悲惨世界》是雨果最重要的作品。

在这部小说中，雨果刻化了从拿破仑在滑铁卢的失败直到反对七月王朝的人民起义这一阶段的历史面貌。

在这本书中我最喜欢的人物就是贯穿本书始终的冉阿让。

年轻勤劳的冉阿让找不到工作在难忍的饥饿驱使下，打碎了商店的一块玻璃，拿了一块面包而前后被判了十九年徒刑。

出狱后，为了报复，在晚上想打死好心收留他的善良的神父。

但老人待人真诚，酣然睡在一个苦役犯旁边的卓绝胸怀，深深地震撼了冉阿让，使他握着铁钎的手慢慢地放了下来。

于是他偷走了银器逃出了神父家。

当冉阿让被抓住时，神父并没有指证他，反而又把两支银烛台给了冉阿让，并对他说：“不要忘记，永远不要忘记您允诺过我，您拿了这些银子是为了做一个诚实的人用的。

”他决定遵守自己的诺言，做一个诚实、正直、仁慈博爱的人。

我认为神父是他一生的转折点。

后来他改名换姓，在一个城市里搞了一项工业的工艺改革，发了财，做了市长，在那里济穷救苦，大做好事。

当他得知芳汀的悲惨遭遇时，决定帮助她，接回她的女儿珂赛特。

而冉阿让也为了救出冤枉的人，只好在法庭上自首自己是真正的苦役犯冉阿让。

于是又被抓走做苦役。

但为了履行对芳汀的诺言，在苦役中，他奋不顾身地从战船上空抢救了帆工，然后机智地逃走。

到外地把芳汀的女儿珂赛特从刻薄奸诈的夫妇那里带走，并隐居在了修道院。

八年了，冉阿让和珂赛特幸福的生活在一起。

读了这本书我发现我们的社会需要这样的人，世界需要这样的人，只有这样我们才能创造我们的生活，创造出一个善良、和睦、光明的世界
