沧浪亭不仅仅是一座亭子,它是我们苏州现存最古老的一座古典园林,距今已有近千年的历史了。
最初为五代 时吴越王外戚孙承佑的花园。
孙承佑是中吴军节度使, 曾出资为著名的“姑苏城外寒山寺”修建过一座七级佛塔。
到北宋庆历四年,经范仲淹举荐在朝为官的诗人苏舜钦因赞同革新,被革职后来到苏州,购得此园。
此后,园子又几度兴废,屡更其主。
南宋绍兴年间,为抗金名 将韩世忠所得。
元、明两代成为僧人所居的妙隐庵、大云庵。
今天园中的绝大部分建筑均始建于清康熙、道光 和同治年间,解放后修复而成。
1963年,沧浪亭被列为江苏省文物保护单位。

水既是我们日常生活之所必需,又是古代文人创造理想生存空间的文化素材。

比方说,眼前这片水面,它一方面构成了沧浪亭的园外景观,同时,它还让苏舜钦等官场失意的古代士大夫文人产生出“沧浪之水”的意境。
据说,苏舜钦花了四万青钱(约合黄金十两)购得此园后,在这水旁建了一个小亭,取《楚辞?渔父》中“沧浪之水清兮,可以濯我缨;沧浪之水浊兮,可以濯我足”的歌谣,将亭命名为“沧浪亭”,表现出一种超然世俗名利之外,归情自然的清高意趣。
另外,从这里还可以看到沧浪亭的另一个有别于苏州其它古典园林的特色,就是:打破高墙围绕,自成丘壑的封闭式格局,以临水的建筑群将园内园外的山水有机地融为一体,形成一种开放性的布局特色。
明、清时期,这里一直是官绅宴饮、文人雅聚的场所,因此,一般认为沧浪亭是中国古代最早的公共园林之一。
