r how guilty other people are, each individual must reach out to success forhimself. Indeed, some economists believe that the world operates by what they call “the rule ofthe jungle”. They believe that in economics a person a1ways attempts to gain profit from hisneighborthat given the chance the poor man would quickly make himself rich by trading to hisown advantage. Also, it is presumptuous to judge another according to his or her apparent fortune. No man canever truly understand the sufferings of his neighbor. A man who appears comfortably rich mayhave suffered elsewhere in his life - through the death of a loved one, for example. Retiredbusinessmen have often worked long hours in their youth. Surely, it must be wiser to respectachievement than to deny that anyone has achieved good in the world. To rely on notions of luck - to believe that life is a kind of lottery - is an attempt to escape , the only time a person can claim that luck is more important than work is when hereflects on his own success. Because of that modesty, the great man then becomes even greater. In 1990, new rules and guidelines were adopted in the United Kingdom that has changed the whole field of Archaeology in that country. The new guidelines improved the situation in all there areas discussed in the passage. First, the new guidelines state that before any construction project can start, the construction site has to be examined by archaeologists to see whether the site is of archaeological interest or value. If the site is of archaeological interest, the next step is for the builders, archaeologists and local government officials to get together and make a plan for preserving the archaeological artifacts, either by building around them or by excavating and documenting them properly before the construction is allowed to proceed. Second, an important part of the new guidelines is a rule that any archaeological work done on the construction site will be paid for by the construction company not by the government. The construction company has to pay for the initial examination of the site, and then for all the work carried out under the preservation plan. This is a whole new source of financial support. The funding from construction companies has allowed researchers to study a far greater range of archaeological sites than they could in the past. Last, the new guidelines provide a lot of paid work for archaeologists, work that didn’t exist before. Expert archaeologists are now hired at all stages of the process to examine the site for archaeological value, then to help draw up the preservation plan to do the research in a professional scientific manner and finally to process the date and write reports and articles. The increased job and career opportunities in Archaeology have increased the number of professional archaeologists in Britain, which is now the highest it’s ever been. In the reading passage, the author raises that reading less literature has caused unfortunate effects on the reading public, the cultural general and literature itself. On the contrary, the professor strongly contradicts with it. To begin with, according to the reading passage, the author mainly talks about reading less literature cannot provide readers with intellectual stimulation. By contrast, the lecturer disagrees with it and she reasons that a book doesn’t have to be literature to be intellectually stimulating. Science books, history and political analysis aren’t literature but they are often of high quality and some of those books are just as creative and well-written as novels and poems. So don’t assume that someone who isn’t reading literature isn’t reading a good book. To be followed, the reading passage indicates that the culture is in decline. However, the speaker holds the opposite opinion and she says that people are not just spending less time in literature and they are spending less time with books in general. However, today, there are many culturally valuable material that isn’t written such as a brilliant song and good movie. People are not wasting their time when they listen to good songs and watch good movies. Those non-literal activities will not lower the culture. Even some of those creative forms can speak more directly to contemporary concerns than literature does. Lastly, the writer in the reading part says that it is the readers’ fault to lead to the less support for literature. By comparison, the listening material presents a totally different opinion that it is the authors’ fault because today’s literature is intended to be difficult to understand. So don’t assume the earlier’s generations of readers would read a lot modern literature today. In 1990, new rules and guidelines were adopted in the United Kingdom that has changed the whole field of Archaeology in that country. There are three most important causesthe quality of food hasbeen greatly improved; people could have medical services; more and more people realize thatregular sports benefit their health. The improving quality of our food is the most important factor of the longer life. We could havenot only enough food as we want, but also the healthier food. Many students in the "make-up test" at the same time, although they have passed the CET-4, but the campus is full of students busy preparing for the test. Some people do not like the idea of taking part in the CET-4 repeatedly because of the high score. Although the cost of CET-4 is not high, it will be a considerable financial burden to take part in the test frequently, and they are preparing every year It is a waste of time, because you can do something more meaningful in the golden age of college. Some people think that thecomputer makes life more convenient and easier because they can compile documents, buy goodsthrough the Internet and do other works on the computer. Nevertheless, in my opinion, thecomputer makes life more complex and stressful. There are many instances supporting myopinion. Before the computer was invented, people only need to learn the knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry and so on. However, today people have to learn how to operate the computer,to use a variety of software and if the computer does not work, people have to learn how to repairit. People have to learn not only the knowledge of software but also that of hardware. No endinglearning makes people exhausted and their life more complex. The computer also makes life more stressful. The society in which we live is called "information society& quot ;. Thanks for the development of the computer, the rhythm of life are increasinglyrapid. The business men has so many meetings to attend, so many e-mails to deal with that theyhave no time to have his lunch. Some students have to work late on the computer to do the homework at night. There are more and more people struggling from the nervous sickness andcomplaining the "busy life". The rapid development of the computer makes people feel stressful, too. The new generation of the software and the hardware, the update of them, all of these make people have to pay more andmore time and money on their computers. Although the computer has become an indispensable part of our life, it can be concluded from theabove statements that the computer makes life more complex and stressful. Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Universities should give the same amount of money to their students' sports activities as they give to their university libraries. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion. In my point of view, sports activities are as important as ,if not more important than, good it is wise for universities to give the same amount of money to their students' sportsactivities as they give their university are numerous clear reasons and i wouldexplore some important ones here. Do you think this is a good idea? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. Offer;school-age children;for each high grade(mark)they get in school School-age children need encouragement from parents to build confidence and willingness in study. The act that parents offer money for each grade they get is a good material incentive, which allows them to have enough pocket money to do what they want to as well as the sufficient reasons to work hard to get a next good grade. Some school-age children that are occupied with studies feel isolated. They do not have enough awareness about what behind the good grades in examinations. Parents’ behavior of offering money for each high grade they get tells them that working hard in study is a necessary. It means parents cares about their efforts and their results. They stand with their children. Material rewards should not be the best way to encourage school-age children to have a better academic performance. Parents have the obligation to let their school-age children know that only by studying hard, can they achieve good grades in examinations. And making efforts in study is all for their own choices of their future. School-age children do not have a mature and sound consumption view. Once they got much money from their parents, they are likely to spend their pocket money without any limit before they have a consideration. They may form a bad habit of spending money. Parents’ behavior of offering money for their children’s each high grade in school will make their school-age children misunderstand that grade or mark,is the most valuable standard to measure their academic performance. And money is the optimum way to express recognition. They have an alternative to tell their children that the process of acquiring weighs more and they always understand them during the way of learning. For example, the frequent communication and participation in their children’s learning activities. In order to attract more customers, advertisers have adopted every possible stimulative factor in making ads, such as sound, light, colours, cartoon films and human performance. Moreover, Iunderstand success to refer to one's ability to achieve the predominant part of his goals in hislifetime, which in turn leads to a correlation between success and income since theaccomplishment of such a natural goal as to provide a good future for your loved ones demandsthe means. What is the simplest and most lawful way to earn enough to consider yourself asuccessful person? To receive a good education and to find a good job. Both receiving aneducation and making a career presuppose one's readiness to work hard, and success without hardwork is simply not possible for the vast majority of the world's population. The reasons andexamples listed below will strengthen my point of view. First of all, considering an education and a career as key factors of success, one will choose topursue a degree from a college or a university. One wishing to be admitted to the university willhave to take several tests. It is doubtful that someone will be so lucky that knowing nothing, hecould pass the test with a high score. A low score means failure, and that test taker will not likelybe admitted. Therefore, in order to be successful, one should prepare for the tests and work hard, because a good education will provide him with a good job and an opportunity to accomplishsome of his goals and dreams. In my lifetime, I have never met a person who could graduate froma college without working hard. Secondly, it is impossible to make a career if one is indolent and lacking knowledge, at least indeveloped countries. Luck plays no role in achieving this success. Even if someone wasunbelievably lucky enough to become a manager not being qualified enough, he will be asked toresign in the near future because of his inability due to lack of knowledge and experience to makeright decisions. For instance, I used to work for a very small company owned by a friend. Thiscompany was later closed because of bankruptcy. The cause of bankruptcy was wrong strategiesand decisions made by the owner. After the failure, he went to a university and worked foranother company so that he could obtain experience and become a successful , he considers himself a successful person because he had turned into reality his twobiggest dreams of producing consumer goods of high quality and making charitable donations toneedy people. In sum, as long as someone understands success as an ability to turn into reality some of hisdreams and goals, he will have to work hard because he will need money. And his chances to earnthat money will remarkably increase if he could graduate from a college and make a career. All ofthese things are simply not possible without hard work. Luck has no place in such a scheme ofevents. It is very difficult for a popular teacher to really help the students learn to the best of their abilities. Popular teachers are more concerned about their image than about pushing students to do their best. As a result, popular teachers are often too easily distracted from the class content, they make the class too easy, and they focus on the students that respond best. Popular teachers are invariably very social. They try to show that they are interested and involved in the students’ world by discussing sports, television shows, and other things which are not related to the subject. Although such conversation may be fun for the students, it leaves less time to cover class material. I had a teacher once who was so talkative that he only completed half of the topics on the syllabus. The students like myself who were interested in learning the material had to read the second half of the textbook on our own. Sharing funny anecdotes about his weekend activities, that professor did not effectively teach what needed to be covered. Another potential problem with popular teachers is the desire to give good grades. If a teacher fails a student, the student invariably is not happy. Therefore, popular teachers often make tests very easy so that students can get high scores. This may satisfy students who don’t care about mastering a subject, but the top students are not challenged or pushed to study and reach a higher level of understanding. Giving everyone good grades does not make the class better; it keeps the stronger students from testing their limits. Finally, popular teachers often focus on the students who respond well to their teaching style and keep the class entertaining. They call on those students who answer the questions in a funny way rather than students who address the topic in a thoughtful manner. They may even highlight the accomplishments of a few students during their conversations rather than trying to engage and encourage everyone. As a result, some students feel left out, and may even stop attending class. The unpopular students lose motivation and do not excel because they are ignored in favor of students that cater to the popular teacher. Popular teachers often do a poor job in helping all students learn because they are more interested in socializing than teaching the class material, they want to give good grades rather than challenge students, and they focus on a few students who like the teacher. help the students learn to the best of their abilities 帮助学生尽其所能地学习 are often too easily distracted from 经常太容易分心 leave less time to do X 为做X留更少的时间 the second half of X X的后半部分 keep the stronger students from testing their limits 阻止较强的学生去测试他们的极限 left out 被忽视,被遗忘 cater to 迎合
